Oklahoma Contemporary Dance Festival is a grant funded program, hosted by Perpetual Motion Dance, which allows dancers ages 13 & up throughout the mid west region to study with professional choreographers throughout the month of July culminating in a final performance of twelve uniquely constructed pieces including modern and aerial work. Eight choreographers have been recognized and confirmed to present choreographic works at the Oklahoma Contemporary Dance Festival: Brandi Kelley (Irvine, California), Rebekah Wallace Garrett (Prairie Dance, OKC, OK), Amanda Jackson (University of Texas at Arlington, Big Rig Dance Collective, Fort Worth, TX), Maria Krey-Gibson (Dance Fusion, OKC, OK) Christie Bondade (Nelson) (Southern Methodist University, Richland College, Texas Woman’s University and Collin College, Richardson, TX), Kayla Jenkins (Perpetual Motion Dance, OKC, OK), Austin Nieves (Men of R.A.C.E. OKCMOA is the exclusive regional venue for fashion exhibition

“Isabelle de Borchgrave: Fashioning Art from Paper” runs through Sept.9 2018, at the Oklahoma City Museum of Art (OKCMOA). The exhibition features 78 life-size, trompe l’œil paper costumes by Belgian artist Isabelle de Borchgrave encompassing over 500 years of fashion history. OKCMOA is the exclusive regional venue for the exhibition. “The Oklahoma City Museum of Art is honored to be one of co-organizers of this prestigious retrospective and national tour,” said President and CEO E. Michael Whittington. “This is the first time de Borchgrave’s four innovative paper fashion collections have been shown together and visitors will enjoy both the scale of the works and range of styles presented. From Marie de Medici to Coco Chanel to Les Ballets Russes, this exhibition is sure to amaze and delight.” de Borchgrave (born 1946) is a prominent Belgian artist, painter and sculptor, best known for her paper costumes. Programming and events throughout the summer will be inspired by “Fashioning Art from Paper” including classes, camps, workshops, public tours and events. Notable events include the Third Thursday on June 21. Celebrating all things fashion, Third Thursday: Strike a Pose will include fashion illustration demonstrations in the Museum’s lobby, live music and a full bar on the Roof Terrace, Curator’s Tour of “Isabelle de Borchgrave” and more. Twilight Time for the Midsummer Fairy Ball
Come to the Fairy Ball! Paseo Artists invite children and parents to the 17th annual Fairy Ball on Saturday, June 16 from 7:00 until 9:00 pm. This delightful summer’s evening harkens whimsical children of all ages to appear as if they have opened a fairy book and stepped out of a tale. Children may dress up as a character from fairy land, and create an evening of colorful music and dance in the historic Crown Jewel Amphitheater located at First Christian Church, 3700 N Walker.
The wonder begins at home before the Fairy Ball. Children can use imaginative thinking and creative play to make a costume from the resources they have at their fingertips. Parents are encouraged to become part of the treasure hunt to find forgotten fancies tucked away in closets, old trunks, dusty boxes and attics. Families can also take a trip to a local thrift store to rag pick from vintage clothing, formals, and whatnots. Intriguing keepsakes with their own stories can be discovered and designed into amazing costumes. When you see through the eyes of imagination, you will have ideas for building a make believe frock. A tuck here, a stitch there, a glittering jewel, something rough or fine, and a wish is all that a costume needs to become yours.
“How shall we beguile this summer’s eve if not with some delight?” asks Lorrie Keller, director of StarDanceSwan and creator of the ball. “Children in their costumes bring the Fairy Ball to life. We are awaiting the appearance of fanciful bugs, blossoms, elves, trolls, fairies, imps, comets, moon men, dragons, and more. Have fun with your own originality; any fanciful character that can be imagined is welcome.”
The Fairy Ball begins at 7:00 p.m. with ‘Flower Magic. Nestled around the trees, children can finish their costumes with their weavings of real flowers and leaves. As twilight approaches, around 7:50 pm, the StarDanceSwan Fairies spin color into motion and invite all children to follow them in rounds of dance. Children are encouraged to move in their naturally expressive ways to music befitting a Fairy Ball. Steve McLinn’s original Ojas Music bedazzles ears and helps little feet spin to his electric acoustical fusion sounds. When the evening grows darker, colors brighten and the music reaches
the stars. Parents can watch their children dance or dance with them in a special area.
Surrounded by trees and lights everyone can gaze into the starry sky while they dance in
their own ways. The ones who bring Midsummer’s Twilight Time into their hearts are
creating opportunities to feel delight and wonder.
On the evening of the Fairy Ball, everyone gathers at the Crown Jewel Amphitheater
located at First Christian Church at 3700 N Walker, just north of the dome and church
building. ‘Flower Magic’ is from 7:00 to 7:50 pm. The dance follows until 9:00 pm.
The Fairy Ball is free to the public; donations are appreciated to help offset the costs of
the event. Children must be accompanied by adults. In the event of inclement weather, a
rain date will be announced for a later time. The Fairy Ball is made possible through the
support of the Oklahoma Arts Council, Paseo Arts Association and Theatre Upon a

Ever wonder what film composers are up to when they aren’t writing scores for blockbusters like Star Wars? Brightmusic Chamber Ensemble will explore the contribution of composers who have blurred the lines between classical music and motion pictures.  Oklahoma City’s premier chamber ensemble will present “Brightmusic Goes Hollywood: The Chamber Music of Film Composers” in its seventh annual Summer Chamber Music Festival at St. Paul’s Cathedral in downtown Oklahoma City.

Many of the composers are well known to the classical music set.  Others are icons of American cinema, and one is practically an institution. The four-concert festival will present classical works by Malcolm Arnold, Ennio Morricone, Sergei Prokofiev, Ralph Vaughan Williams, Nino Rota, Bernard Herrmann, John Williams, Erich Wolfgang Korngold, Dmitri Shostakovich, Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco, Leonard Bernstein and Miklós Rózsa.

All concerts will begin at 7:30 pm, except the 4:00 pm Sunday concert on June 17, at St. Paul’s Cathedral, 127 NW 7th Street (at Robinson).  Save $30 by purchasing a $50 festival pass that includes admission to all four concerts.  Season Subscribers, students and active-duty military personnel are admitted free with ID.
 

Music Trivia Quiz:   

One of the composers on the program for the Summer Festival wrote symphonies, concertos, ballets, choral music, chamber music and scores for more than a hundred films, including Bridge on the River Kwai in 1957, for which he won an Oscar.  Hint: he was born in England and was knighted in 1993. Another hint:  his work appears in the first concert of the Summer Festival.

Sir Malcolm Arnold, CBE (1921-2006) was an English composer with breathtaking output, including nine symphonies, numerous concertos and other concert works, music for choral, wind and chamber ensembles, five ballets and two operas.  And somehow he still found time to compose scores for over 100 films, including The Bridge on the River Kwai (1957) for which he won an Oscar.  One of his more popular short works is the Divertimento for Flute, Oboe and Clarinet, which will be heard in Concert 1 of the Summer Festival.

The visual arts in OKC are booming. From emerging artists discovering their voices to veteran artists working with renewed vision and all points in between, the current creative energy and output in the Metro area is impossible to ignore.  Combined with investment from public, private and non-profit sectors, our artists are in increasingly high demand.

Through a panel series featuring a diverse array of artists, curators, patrons and community members, Café Society at Artspace seeks to unite generations of our creative forces and discover a more comprehensive view of the Oklahoma City Art Scene.

This month we will be joined by Curtis Jones, Katelynn Knick, April Holder, Cara Alizadeh-Fara, and Jasmine Jones as we discuss the future and possibilities of OKC's arts & culture scene.

This event is free & open to the public--all are welcome to join in the conversation!
