CONTEMPORARY DANCE FESTIVAL FINAL PERFORMANCE VERY ENJOYABLE

COMMENTS: OKLAHOMA
CONTEMPORARY DANCE FESTIVAL
VERY ENJOYABLE

By Nancy P. Condit

It turns out that a reviewer cannot take a busman’s holiday, pay their own
way and go to a dance performance unnoticed.

Therefore, let this casual observer say that I really enjoyed Saturday
night’s finale of Perpetual Motion company’s festival with four
companies performing at Oklahoma Contemporary.

Perpetual Motion’s Festival continues to give Oklahoma City audiences a
chance to see companies from around Oklahoma, including Tulsa, and as
far away as Dallas.

Living Water Dance Company’s choreographer and dancer Rachel Cotts
presented a heartfelt  “Island Dance” as she was overcome first with waves
of grief, then healing, as well as Christina Woodrow’s “be here now” with
the excellent philosophy of “being here and connected.” The company is
based in Tulsa.

Muscle Memory Dance Theater choreographer Lesley Snelson presented
three equally adept dancers performing with concrete bricks, with a third
falling and getting up. The company is based in Dallas.

Race Dance performed choreographer Jeremy Duvall’s “Sweet Disposition”
well, and I always enjoy the Men of Race. They are based in Oklahoma City,
with company members coming from Lawton to rehearse and perform.

Perpetual Motion, based in Oklahoma City, continues to be good on stage –
I came in late for the first piece – holiday, and amazing in the aerial
“Where Time Stands Still,” choreographed by Kim Kieffer. The top two
dancers on two silks each, slowly lowered themselves to the lower two.
I could not see how the top two dancers were secured as they performed
their initial work.

Perpetual Motion will be holding auditions for two to three company
members on July 17 from 7:00 – 9:00 P.M. at Oklahoma Contemporary.

SUNDAY TWILIGHT CONCERT FROM THREE DANCE COMPANIES

2013 Sunday Twilight Concert – Dance Showcase
OKC Ballet, Lifechange Ballroom, & Race Dance Co.
7:30 p.m. July 14 Myriad Gardens Great Lawn

The Arts Council of Oklahoma City’s Sunday Twilight Concert Series, presented by Devon, invites performing arts lovers of all ages to free, family-friendly concerts at the Myriad Gardens. The Arts Council of Oklahoma City welcomes the Oklahoma City Ballet, Lifechange Ballroom, and Race Dance Co. as featured performers in a fabulous night of song and dance Sunday, July 14 at 7:30PM.

To begin the July 14, Sunday Twilight Concert, students from the Oklahoma City Ballet’s Pre-Professional Summer Intensive will present a variety of dance styles. Also on the line-up is a performance by LifeChange Ballroom dance studio, a program that teaches young children confidence, sportsmanship, and the value of hard work through dance. In 2012, the program was selected as the winner of the Oklahoma Nonprofit Excellence (ONE) Awards in the Sports and Recreation Category. Rounding out the evening is the Race Dance Company, a group founded through a belief to bring about social awareness and change through dance education. Oklahoma’s first professional jazz, hip-hop, and contemporary company was selected in 2010 as one of the Oklahoma Gazette’s top five performance companies in Oklahoma.

“It is such a thrill for the Arts Council of Oklahoma City to bring together the talents of three major Oklahoma City dance groups on one stage,” said Christina Foss, director of the Sunday Twilight Concert Series, presented by Devon. “It will be a memorable evening!”
The Sunday Twilight Concerts take place from 7:30 to 9 p.m. at the Band Shell on the Great Lawn at the Myriad Botanical Gardens. Attendees are encouraged to bring blankets, chairs, and picnics; however pets and glass containers are prohibited.
