June's not over yet... ...so all you Stillwater folks note that we'll be at Zannotti's, 113 W 7th, this Friday the 30th from 7:00 to 10:00 pm.  No cover, wonderful small plates, fine wines, brews and spirits.

The First Day of July... we'll be at our regular First Saturday Miss Brown Duo gig at the Full Circle Book Store.   7:30 - 9:30.  Located on the ground floor of 50 Penn Place in the heart of Oklahoma City, Full Circle's Garden Cafe offers live music on Friday and Saturday nights, with sweets, coffee, fine wines and craft beers.

The Week of the Woody Guthrie Festival... we'll be running around quite a bit:  First the Jimmy LaFave Tribute on Wednesday, July 12th at the Crystal Theatre; then our Pastures of Plenty set with the Quartet on Thursday the 13th at 8:00; then a couple of songs at the Bob Childers Hour, 1:00 pm at the Rocky Road Tavern on Saturday the 15th; then later that night, Miss Brown to You with Roger Kimball at the Jazz Lab back in Edmond, and finally we'll be at the Pancake Breakfast and the Hoot for Huntington's on Sunday, July 16th. We hope to see you out in Okemah, if not, then at UCO on Saturday Night, July 15th!  We'll all need to stay well hydrated.  And check out the Woodyfest website for all the doings out there in Okemah that week!

And finally... we're back at Zannotti's on Saturday, July 21st. 7 - 10. Admission includes blockbuster summer exhibition 

"Kehinde Wiley: A New Republic" 

 

                                                                 

Kids 17 and under will get free admission to the Oklahoma City Museum of Art on Saturdays and Sundays in July. Normally $10, admission includes the Museum's summer exhibition "Kehinde Wiley: A New Republic" on the first and third floors.  

"We have a variety of kids' activities planned for July," said Tracy Truels, director of learning and engagement at OKCMOA. "Every Saturday from 1 to 4 p.m. we will have come-and-go art making in the Museum's classrooms, and every project will be inspired by 'A New Republic.' We also have a fun gallery detail search as well as our Discovery Packs available free anytime. These hands-on activities are great ways for kids to take what they are seeing in the galleries and translate that energy and inspiration into creative expression."

 

OKCMOA decided the Kehinde Wiley exhibit was important enough to the community for

the Museum of Art to fund this program, noted Becky Weintz, director of marketing and communications.

Free admission will be available in person only on Saturdays and Sundays from July 1 through 30. The Museum is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays and noon to 5 p.m. on Sundays.

 

Adult admission is $12 with discounts available for seniors, students and retired military members. Active military and their families receive free admission all summer long through the Blue Star Museums program. Additionally, school and youth groups receive free admission and transportation reimbursement year-round thanks to Insamuch Foundation. These groups must book in advance by calling (405) 278-8213.

"Kehinde Wiley: A New Republic" is a career retrospective of Kehinde Wiley's work, including his exploration of the European tradition of portraiture. Adopting the format used by old masters such as Titian, Van Dyke, Ingres and Manet, Wiley replaced historical subjects with young African-Americans sporting fashionable, urban gear: puffy down jackets, sneakers, hoodies, jerseys and baseball caps. The exhibition is open through September 10.

"Kehinde Wiley: A New Republic" is organized by the Brooklyn Museum and made possible by the Henry Luce Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts.

Almost 470,000 visitors nationwide have seen blockbuster exhibition 

Tickets are on sale for the Oklahoma City Museum of Art's summer blockbuster, "Kehinde Wiley: A New Republic." The exhibition opens June 17, and Oklahoma City is the last stop on the national tour. "A New Republic" presents over 50 paintings and sculptures spanning the celebrated artist's 14-year career. Organized by the Brooklyn Museum, "A New Republic" has travelled to Texas, Washington, Virginia, Arizona and Ohio.

"I hope visitors to this exhibition will enjoy not only the beauty, color and scale of Mr. Wiley's work but also the discussions that these artworks provoke," said Eugenie Tsai, curator of "A New Republic" and the John and Barbara Vogelstein Curator of Contemporary Art at the Brooklyn Museum. "This is an exhibition that needs to be experienced in person and preferably with friends or family members. The artwork opens up a dialogue with the viewer and I think summer visitors to OKCMOA will enjoy the many conversations that arise from this exhibition."

"Kehinde Wiley bridges the gap between contemporary and historical art," added Michael Anderson, Ph.D., OKCMOA director of curatorial affairs. "His paintings and sculptures reference historical artworks while including modern dress, bright colors and 21st-century subjects. By replacing historical subjects with contemporary African-American men and women, Wiley encourages us to think deeper about representation, gender roles and power in the context of art history. We are honored to host his work here in Oklahoma City."

Beginning June 17, visitors can enjoy "A New Republic" on the Museum's first and third floors. "A New Republic" will begin in the first floor galleries with Wiley's earliest work, created around 2001 during his residency at the Studio Museum in Harlem. It was around this time that Wiley began his process of "street casting," pulling subjects off the street to pose for photos that he later referenced in his works.

The exhibition continues with Wiley's experimentation in referencing specific paintings by renowned masters such as Titian, Van Dyke, Ingres and Manet. Works such as "Napoleon Leading the Army over the Alps," "Portrait of a Venetian Ambassador, Aged 59, II," "Colonel Platoff on his Charger" and "Equestrian Portrait of King Philip II (Michael Jackson)" directly reference paintings of a similar name.

The exhibition resumes in the Museum's third floor galleries with Wiley's "World Stage" series. Beginning in 2006, Wiley opened a satellite studio in Beijing and began street casting international subjects. The "World Stage" series includes subjects from Brazil, China, Israel, France, Haiti, Jamaica, Lagos and Dakar and Sri Lanka.

The final sections of the exhibition include "An Economy of Grace," which features the only female portraiture in the exhibition, as well as Wiley's recent stained glass work.

Adult tickets to the exhibition are $12 and include admission to the Museum, including OKCMOA's permanent collection. Discounted tickets are available for seniors, students, groups and children. Members of the Museum, children under 5 and active military members and their families receive free admission to the exhibition.

The Salvation Army of Central Oklahoma Kicks Off Fan Drive

Westlake Ace Hardware teams up with charity to raise money for fans

WHAT:           Temperatures are on the rise and The Salvation Army needs help restocking its supply of fans to help those in need beat the inevitable heat.

A monetary donation can be made toward fans at ALL area Westlake Ace Hardware locations beginning June 22nd and running through July 9th. The Salvation Army will distribute fans locally throughout the summer to qualified individuals. 

For a $5 donation, one “fan blade” can be given; $10 provides two blades; $15 for three blades; or $20 covers the entire fan. Any donation amount will be accepted.

Westlake Ace Hardware is kicking off the fan drive in the Oklahoma City region with a donation of 50 box fans.
