Oklahoma City University’s internationally renowned American
Spirit Dance Company will cut loose with 24 rapid-fire tap, jazz and
musical theatre
dances in its annual Spring Show from March 13 to 15 at OCU’s
Kirkpatrick Fine Arts Center.
From hits
like “Footloose” and “Movin’ Out” to a monster musical number to
emotional, lyrical pieces, Director Jo Rowan explains the show features
something for
everyone. Rowan’s poignant “Letter to Sarah,” taken from the famous
letter written by Union officer Sullivan Ballou during the Civil War,
honors the sacrifices made by soldiers in battle.
Broadway
choreographer and OCU professor Brian J. Marcum brings Frankenstein to
life, along with mummies werewolves, skeletons and the Bride of
Frankenstein in
“Transylvania Mania.” Company Manager Carla Richard said a spectacular
array of moving lights and black lights will accentuate this crowd
pleaser. Another of Marcum’s dances, “West Side Story Medley,”
incorporates every melody from the musical and features
the dynamic men of the dance company.
This year’s
show also includes a taste of hip hop with Beyonce’s “End of Time.”
Another high-energy dance, “The Hunt,” puts dancers – and the audience –
on their
toes with a unique sound enhanced by microphoned tap boards.
“It’s like listening to an orchestra of the feet,” Rowan said.
The
140-member American Spirit Dance Company has been a seed bed for
professional performers all over the world. Nearly 50 former members
have become Radio City
Rockettes.
Show times
are 8 p.m. March 13 and 14, and 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. March 15. Tickets are
