STUDENTS & RACE DANCE
COMPANY SHARE STAGE IN
HIP HOP NUTCRACKER AT
OCCC VENUE

RACE Dance Company mentors 90 students from dance programs in six Oklahoma City Public Schools for the fifth annual production of the Hip Hop Nutcracker (HHN). Show performances are set for 2 and 7:30 p.m., Saturday, December 17 at Oklahoma City Community College Visual and Performing Arts Center located at 7777 S May Ave. in Oklahoma City.

“For the first time ever, we’ve extended the invitation to elementary schools involved with Prairie Dance Youth Company. Attendees will be blown away by the talent these young kids possess,” said Hui Cha Poos, Executive Director of RACE Dance Company.
In addition, students enrolled at Douglass High School, Harding Fine Arts Academy John Marshall High School, Northwest Classen High School, Oklahoma Centennial Mid-High School, and U.S. Grant High School will perform in the show. RACE Dance members meet with the kids once-to-twice a week leading up to the show.

“We go to teach them the choreography and fundamentals of hip-hop, but we leave knowing we’ve impacted these kids way beyond the dance floor,” Brandi Gable, Artistic Director for RACE Dance Company. “For many of these kids, this is life changing – being able to perform in a professional setting is something they never dreamt would be possible.”
Poos says HHN also advances RACE's mission to bring social awareness and change through dance performances and education.

“We bring kids together from different schools and different backgrounds in a non-competitive environment where it’s all about collaboration and inclusion. The result is truly magical – not just for the kids, the audience can see and feel it throughout the performance,” said Poos.

Set to high-energy music, and contemporary, hip hop and jazz moves, HHN tells the story of a young man who searches for something missing from his life, only to discover that "it," exists within himself. The take away for the audience is a message of perseverance, family and holiday spirit.

Individual tickets can be purchased for $20 online at tickets.occc.edu. For more information about HHN, visit: racedance.com.

January...
In brief: Full Circle Saturday, January 7th. Bohemian Cafe Saturday, January 21st.  UCO Sunday, January 22nd. Super Special Surprise Event Friday, January 27th.  Sisters of Swing at Saint Charles, Saturday, January 28th.

And an episode of crass commercialism...
Miss Brown to You has some really exciting things coming up is 2017, the details of which I am not able to disclose as yet, but I can tell you this:  we are planning a CD project for the fall.  We've been fortunate to never have to resort to crowd-funding, and we have some seed money in place, but to raise some more capital we are proposing this novel fundraising technique: if you want to support our next album, why not purchase one of our already-made CDs?  You can purchase online from MissBrowntoYou.com  : you can also listen to the tracks on Apple Music, Rhapsody or CD Baby.  We'll also have plenty of CDs on hand at shows.

There is some native Winter Holiday coming up, at which it's customary to give gifts.  I'm just sayin'.

OCU PRESENTS
BROADWAY STYLE DANCE
EXTRAVANGANZA:
"Home for the Holidays"

Oklahoma City University’s world-renowned American Spirit Dance Company will celebrate Christmas through tap, jazz, ballet and musical theater dance as the annual Home for the Holidays Christmas show returns to the Kirkpatrick Auditorium stage Dec. 8 to 11.
Nearly 125 dancers, under the direction of OCU award-winning Dance Chair Jo Rowan, will perform longtime audience favorites and a wide array of new numbers.
The show opens with a high-energy office party celebration of the beginning of the holiday season followed by a humorous commentary on the remoteness of relationships caused by an overuse of electronic devices. It then moves to a tap celebration of Christmas in Hawaii before snow and ice skating cool things off.
Several dances tap into the longing for friends and relatives who are far away during the holiday season and the emotions caused by separation due to varying circumstances.
OCU is known for many graduates and former students who have enjoyed careers as Rockettes.  Many began their careers with the annual favorite “Santa Kickline.”  A new “Jingle Bells Kickline” has been added to this year’s show.  Other annual favorites are “Parade of the Wooden Soldiers,” a precision tap number, and “March of the Toy Soldiers,” a tour de force by male dancers.
The show concludes with a Nativity and a joyful celebration of the meaning of Christmas with well wishes for all.
“Home for the Holidays is a fast-moving, beautiful and entertaining show with something for everyone,” Rowan said.
Home for the Holidays is recommended for ages 6 and up. Show times are 8 p.m. Dec. 8 and 9, 2 and 8 p.m. Dec. 10 and 2 p.m. Dec. 11.
Tickets are $29 each and can be purchased by calling 405-208-5227 or visiting okcu.edu/tickets.  Group rates offering substantial savings are available for churches, schools, independent living centers and similar organizations.
