REPOST:

LOCAL HIGH SCHOOLERS
SHINE IN RACE DANCE COMPANY'S
"HIP HOP NUTCRACKER"

Members of RACE Dance Company join forces with seven Oklahoma City Public High School dance programs for the return of Oklahoma City’s annual Hip Hop Nutcracker (HHN). Performances are set for December 5th and 6th at 7:30 p.m., and December 7th at 2:00 p.m. at Bishop McGuinness High School. General admission tickets can be purchased at a discounted rate of $16 at tickets.racedance.com or $20 at the door.

At-risk students enrolled in dance programs at Capitol Hill High School, Douglass High School, Millwood High School, Northwest Classen High School, Putnam City West High School, Putnam City North High School and U.S. Grant High School auditioned for HHN in September. RACE chose 63 students, ages 14-and-up to take part in the performance. Each student has been paired with a member of RACE and mentored over the last three months in preparation for the performance.

This year RACE has amped up the production of HHN with the addition of Starship Playground Producers and DJs Ben Edison and Chase Arnold. The duo will spin music live during the shows.

Like the original Nutcracker, HHN follows the journey of a young man who seeks to find something that is missing in his life, only to discover it exists within himself. However, HHN’s high-energy music and dance styles incorporate many more twists and turns than the traditional Nutcrackers. The take away for the audience is a message of perseverance, family and holiday spirit.

OU COLLEGIUM MUSICUM
PRESENTS
THE PLAY OF DANIEL, WITH
MEMBERS OF DANCE DEPT.

“THE PLAY OF DANIEL is nothing less than a medieval opera. It originated at the Beauvais Cathedral, in the mid 1100s and was performed by students at the Cathedral school, led by teachers known as Goliards, until the later 1200s,” says Eugene Enrico, OU Reaugh Professor of Musicology and conductor of the opera.

The University of Oklahoma School of Music presents The Play of Daniel, as part of the Sutton Concert Series at 3 p.m. on Sunday, November 23, in the Grayce B. Kerr Gothic Hall of the Catlett Music Center. “The Play of Daniel dramatizes two stories from the Book of Daniel in the Bible: Belshazzar’s Feast, the Handwriting on the Wall, and Daniel’s interpretation of the handwriting, prophesying that Belshazzar’s kingdom is doomed. The second story involves Daniel coming to the court of the new King Darius, his entrapment by the Envious Counselors, his being cast into the lion’s den, his protection by an Angel of God, and his prophesy of the Nativity.
“We feel privileged to have an outstanding cast including Rodney Westbrook as Daniel; Les Flanagan as Belshazzar and Habakkuk; Nicole Robertson as Belshazzar’s Queen; Andrew Wannigman as Darius; and Skye Singleton as the Angel. Tina Kambour, choreographer, and Bill Ferrara, stage director, also collaborated on the production. Lloyd Cracknell arranged the costumes and masks,” noted Enrico. A medieval band featuring medieval fiddle, bass gamba, troubadour harp, psaltery, lute, medieval flute, recorders and a battery of percussion will accompany the singers.
All Sutton Series performances are in OU’s Catlett Music Center, 500 W. Boyd, in your OU Arts District! Tickets are $9 for adults and $5 for students, faculty, staff and senior adults, and $10 at the door.  For tickets and up-to-date information call the Fine Arts Box Office at (405) 325-4101.

Available works range from small-scale drawings, prints, and ceramic pieces to larger scale paintings and mixed media items.

“This event gives students a chance to showcase their artwork within a broader scale, while also allowing the public a chance to purchase student and faculty work,” said VASA president Shane Jensen. “It is the hope of VASA to promote the arts at the University and within the local community. Artists Deborah Brackenbury, Elyse Bogart, Douglas Shaw Elder, & Karyn Gilman join forces for the latest installation at IAO.

Goddess, godliness, godlessness, goddess in disguise, anti-goddess...the female form and psyche have faced a history of deification and vilification. If we cover it all up we are Madonnas, the antithesis of sexual; if we uncover it we are sexy, or are we promiscuous? What's a girl to do? Four artists decide to tackle the question.... Goddess or Anti-goddess?

While you're here, check out the fantastic works from UCO students and their Capstone projects!

OKLAHOMA CITY BALLET
PRESENTS ALL NEW
THE NUTCRACKER

The Nutcracker
Image provided

Oklahoma City Ballet is proud to announce an all-new production of “The Nutcracker,” transformed for audiences with new sets and costumes, presented by Devon Energy. The cherished holiday favorite will be performed at the Civic Center Music Hall for a 10-run performance, Dec. 13-22. Single tickets start at $26 and will be available through OKC Ballet and Civic Center Box Offices beginning Nov. 3.

This year’s production debuts all-new set and costume designs, offering Oklahoma City a production that will provide a fresh holiday experience for families across the state. The new sets were designed by Emmy Award-winning scenic designer Gregory Crane, and the elaborate new costumes are from Colorado designer Susanne Hubbs, whose designs have been featured in “Dance Magazine.”

Choreographed by Artistic Director Robert Mills, Oklahoma City Ballet’s version of “The Nutcracker” remains true to the original libretto that premiered in 1892 at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg. Tchaikovsky’s familiar score will be performed live at every performance by the Oklahoma City Philharmonic, led by Music Director Joel Levine.

This classic fairy tale tells the story of Clara, who receives a beautiful, handmade wooden Nutcracker from the quirky Heir Drosselmeyer at a Christmas Eve party. That night, Clara sneaks downstairs to play with her new Nutcracker and is swept away to a fantasy land of toy soldiers, giant mice and dancing snowflakes. After saving her beloved Nutcracker from the evil Mouse King, she is whisked away to the enchanted Kingdom of Sweets and Toys, where she is treated to performances by fanciful, dancing confections and toys including the Sugar Plum Fairy.

As an added treat, Santa Claus will be in the main lobby 1 hour before all performances. Families will have the opportunity to take photos with Santa as a holiday keepsake (service fees apply). Children are invited to make their own Nutcracker oil pastel drawing 1 hour before all performances and during matinée Intermissions, sponsored by Oklahoma Contemporary. Following each 2 p.m. matinée performance, dancers from “The Nutcracker” will be available in the main lobby for photos and autographs and patrons can enjoy refreshments courtesy of Braum’s.

Performances take place on Saturday, Dec. 13 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.; Sunday, Dec. 14 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.; Friday, Dec. 19 at 7 p.m.; Saturday, Dec. 20 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.; Sunday, Dec. 21 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m., and Monday, Dec. 22 at 7 p.m. Single tickets may be purchased starting Nov. 3 by calling 405-848-TOES (8637) or online at www.okcballet.com/nutcracker. All performances take place at the Civic
Center Music Hall, 201 North Walker, Oklahoma City. The Oklahoma City Ballet Box Office is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and is located at 7421 North Classen, Oklahoma City.
