OU SUMMER DANCE
PERFORMS PIECES BY
OKLAHOMA FESTIVAL
BALLET AND
CONTEMPORARY DANCE
OKLAHOMA

The University of Oklahoma School of Dance (SOD) is hosting Summer Dance performances in Reynolds Performing Arts Center, studio 3002 on June 26 at 8:00 p.m., June 27 at 3:00 and 8:00 p.m. and June 28 at 3:00 p.m. Oklahoma Festival Ballet and Contemporary Dance Oklahoma will participate in the production and the performances will be followed by a champagne and dessert reception with the dancers and choreographers.

The 2015 Summer Dance choreographers include SOD professors Ilya Kozadayev, Austin Hartel, and SOD director Mary Margaret Holt, as well as graduate student Tye Love. Lighting design will be by Professor Emeritus Jerry Lewis. Each summer, students from the School of Dance spend four weeks learning and perfecting original and traditional choreography as well as participating in intensive technique classes. Director Holt has said, “We greatly enjoy the opportunity to expand our companies’ repertoires during the summer, often experimenting with works that have a lighter or more experimental feel as well as a more intimate connection with the audience.”

These performances provide a unique opportunity for the audience because they take place in Studio 3002, which is transformed by theatrical lighting from a studio space to a performance space. The audience sits only feet from the performers, in a more intimate environment, requiring dancers to communicate with more subtly than would be the case on a traditional proscenium stage. Following the performance, the audience has the opportunity to discuss the production with both the dancers and choreographers over dessert and champagne.

Chelsea Walker, SOD senior, describes Summer Dance: “It is an opportunity to expand my performance skills while training at the University. After two years of Summer Dance I can honestly say these have been my favorite performance opportunities at OU.”

Tickets for the performance and reception cost $27 for adults and $15 for students and are available for purchase with credit card by calling the OU Fine Arts Box Office at (405) 325-4101. Tickets will also be available for purchase one hour before each performance by cash or check only. Due to limited seating advance purchase is recommended.

The University of Oklahoma’s program in dance was founded in 1963 by Yvonne Choteau and Miguel Terekhov, former principal dancers with Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo. What had been a department became the School of Dance in 1998, with Mary Margaret Holt as Director. Undergraduate and graduate dance majors, along with general education students, total approximately 1000 enrollees in dance classes per semester. The School of Dance's state-of-the-art facility in the Donald W. Reynolds Performing Arts Center was completed in 2005.

Dancers of RACE Dance Company and Men of Race have come together for their final concert of season 6.

“ENERGY”
Look around you right now…. Can you tell what is happening? Can you hear it, see it or feel it?
There is a potential for power in each of us no matter who we are.  This power or ability to make things happen is called energy. It’s what makes everything possible.  Whether it is kinetic, potential, sound, or electric; energy is transferred through us and between us at all times.  More importantly, it has the power to transform us.
More than 12 different choreographers from Oklahoma, Los Angeles, and New York have choreographed original works that investigate a variety of energies through movement.  They are unique works that vary in tempo, story, and genre according to each person’s experience with and perspective of energy. The dance styles include jazz, hip hop and contemporary.
“Energy is never created or destroyed. We are an exquisite collection of trillions of vibrating particles engaged in an intricate dance of energy!”  ~ Anonymous

RECENT ACQUISITIONS
GALLERY AT OKCMOA ACQUIRES NEW
WORK BY CONTEMPORARY
ARTIST LISA HOKE

"Come on down Oklahoma now on view at
the Oklahoma City Museum of Art

Lisa Hoke (American, b. 1952). "Come on Down, Oklahoma," 2015. Cardboard packaging, glue, and hardware. Oklahoma City Museum of Art. Museum commission with funds from the Carolyn A. Hill Collections Endowment, 2015.001, © Lisa Hoke
The newest addition to the Oklahoma City Museum of Art's permanent collection is an 8-by-8-foot collage created by New York sculptor Lisa Hoke. Commissioned by the Museum, the collage is composed of material from Hoke's 2013 site-specific installation at OKCMOA, "Come on Down," a monumental wall sculpture, measuring 15 feet high and spanning more than 150 feet.

"It was really important to me that 'Come On Down, Oklahoma' be created from elements extracted one final time from the original installation, representing an emotional response to the enormous, superhuman scale of the installation and the unique opportunity to work with the Oklahoma City Museum of Art," Hoke said.

"I started with the white shirt boxes that I've always loved-the top left corner of the work-and it was a big section that I've moved around the country from show to show," she continued. "In fact, I didn't want to part with it. However, I soon realized that it should be the section to inspire the entire piece."

"The Oklahoma City Museum of Art has a strong commitment to supporting contemporary artists through the exhibition and acquisition of their work," explained President and CEO, E. Michael Whittington. "The beauty and monumentality of Lisa's installation 'Come on Down' mesmerized our visitors. We were delighted that she reconfigured her original installation specifically for our permanent collection."

Hoke began her career by working with found materials such as cast iron, wire and automobile parts, but then turned to the mass-produced, color-saturated cardboard found in consumer culture. Hoke said, "I wanted to show the positive effect of the colorful and attention-grabbing packaging. The negative effect is the tremendously disposable society in which we live."

She collects items from eBay and discarded materials from local stores and the recycling bins in the basement of her apartment building. She sorts her items by color-after each item has been carefully scrutinized-before cutting them up and reassembling into collages.

Lisa Hoke has constructed works for many solo exhibitions and has been included in numerous prestigious group shows. She has work in the permanent collections of the Whitney Museum of Art in New York City, the New York Public Library, the Johnson Museum of Art at Cornell University, and the D'Amour Museum, Springfield, MA, to name a few. Lisa was born in Virginia Beach, VA in 1952. She received a Bachelor of Arts from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro in 1974, followed by a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Virginia Commonwealth University in 1978. Lisa has lived and worked in New York City for over thirty years. She is currently represented by Pavel Zoubok Gallery, New York, NY.

"Come on Down, Oklahoma" is currently on view in the Museum's "Recent Acquisitions of Contemporary Art" gallery alongside works by Jill Downen, Michael Eastman, Jonathan Hils, Franco Mondini-Ruiz, and Wayne White, who each had exhibitions at the Museum.
