BRIGHTMUSIC
SOCIETY'S
2017-18 SEASON

Oklahoma City’s premier chamber ensemble celebrates its 15th year.
The Brightmusic Society of Oklahoma announces the 2017-18 concert season of the Brightmusic Chamber Ensemble, its 15th as Oklahoma City’s premier chamber music ensemble.  Five regular-season concerts will be presented in Oklahoma City’s beautiful and historic St. Paul’s Cathedral, renowned for its acoustic richness.

Artistic Directors Chad Burrow and Amy I-Lin Cheng have programmed an exciting season replete with cornerstones of classical music, such as Mozart, Schubert and Brahms, punctuated by the freshness and high-energy of 20th- and 21st-century composers such as Gershwin, Piazzolla, and Oklahoma City’s own Edward Knight.  The season culminates in a world premiere of a work by another Oklahoma composer, Samuel Magrill, commissioned by Brightmusic, capping a virtuosic tour-de-force season.

“Across the board, the ensemble’s performances were well-balanced, well-conceived and beautifully executed.”  Lauren Hughes, The Oklahoman, June 25, 2017

Concert 1   Sept. 26  7:30 pm  “Song and Dance” will feature works of 20th and 21st century composers celebrating song, dance and rhythm.  Brightmusic strings, clarinet, horn and piano will present works by George Gershwin (“Porgy and Bess” Ballade), a suite of four tangos by Astor Piazzolla, a work by Edward Knight and a sextet by Ernö Dohnányi (aka Ernst von Dohnanyi).  See if you can resist the urge to tap your foot or get up and dance.

Concert 2   Nov. 7  7:30 pm  “Masterworks for Three” revisits the old classics with trios for strings, horn and piano by Mozart, Mendelssohn and Brahms.

Concert 3   Jan. 23  7:30 pm  “String Theory” presents a trio of string quintets by Bunch, Mozart and Dvořák with a touch of clarinet.

Concert 4   March 20  7:30 pm   “Montage of Sound” is a whirlwind tour of seven 19th and 20th century works for viola, woodwinds, horn, piano and tenor by a diverse group of composers: Donizetti, Schubert, and Vaughn Williams, and many others.

Concert 5   April 17  7:30 pm  “Old and New” concludes the season with works for strings, flute & piano by Saint-Saëns, Schubert and a world premiere by Samuel Magrill commissioned by Brightmusic featuring the composer at the piano.  Be among the first to hear it!
