of the Bach and Brahms Festival

Tomorrow, Saturday, May 26th, begins the four-concert Bach and Brahms Festival presented by Brightmusic – a first for us and for OKC!  All four concerts will be performed in the acoustically rich St. Paul’s Episcopal Cathedral, 127 Seventh St. (at Robinson) in downtown Oklahoma City.

Concert 1
Saturday night, May 26, 7:30 pm

Cellist Thomas Zieba will kick off the Festival with Bach’s Cello Suite No. 1.  Guest organist Gerald Frank (professor emeritus of organ and harpsichord at Oklahoma State University) will follow with Bach’s Passacaglia and Fugue in C Minor.  The second half of this program will be Brahms’ Sextet for Strings No. 2 in G Major.  Two violins (Gregory Lee and Hal Grossman), two violas (Royce McLarry and Mark Neumann) and two cellos (Jonathan Ruck and Tomasz Zieba) will perform this luscious all-strings work.

Concert 2
Sunday afternoon, May 27, 4:00 pm

This will be an all-Brahms concert.  Artistic Directors Chad Burrow and Amy Cheng will perform Brahms’ Sonata No. 2 for Clarinet and Piano.  Violinist Gregory Lee will then join pianist Amy Cheng for Brahms’ Sonata No. 3 for Violin and Piano.  After intermission, five of the Brightmusic musicians will present Brahms’ Quintet for Clarinet and Strings in B Minor.  Chad Burrow will be the clarinetist.  The string ensemble will be an all-OU lineup of string professors – Hal Grossman and Gregory Lee on violin, Mark Neumann on viola and Jonathan Ruck on cello.

The Sunday concert is at 4:00 pm – not at 7:30 pm, as it erroneously appeared in one place on our website.

More information about Concerts 3 and 4 (Tuesday, May 29 and Thursday, May 31) will follow.

Individual concert admission is $10 per person for each concert.  Season Membership Pass holders will be admitted to all Festival concerts without charge, as will students with ID.  If you’re not a Season Membership Pass holder, you can save money by purchasing a four-concert Festival Pass for $30 per person.  You can do that online (visit www.brightmusic.org and follow the instructions on the right-hand side of the Home page or the Concerts page).  Or you can purchase a Festival Pass at the door to tomorrow night’s concert.

A complete program listing – and now complete program notes – are available on the Home and Concerts pages of our website, www.brightmusic.org
